Sometimes your smartphone can do so many things that it’s a little overwhelming – I mean, I know I can find a million Starbucks locations with my Android. But when I’m standing on a corner in Santa Barbara after I hit up the zoo with my kids and I’m looking for one, I want to find one, fast. Probably a McDonalds for the kids too while I’m at it. I certainly don’t want to be scrolling around looking for locations and directions, so I downloaded an app called Aloqa.
Aloqa is a GPS navigational app that lets you choose the channels, or categories, that you are interested in so you can find things quicker. For instance, Starbucks is very important to me, so I have the Starbucks channel. By tapping on it at any time, it will automatically give me the four closest Starbucks locations near me. I can map it – and even better – tap again and get directions, all in seconds. Sa-weet!
Setting it up does take a few minutes, but then its smooth sailing. Go through the channels and decide which ones you are interested in keeping, and which ones you’re not. Then go to Menu, Setup, and then choose the alert for each channel. Unless you are on a road trip looking for gas stations and Starbucks constantly, you’ll probably want to turn the channels off until you need them.
This app would be a lifesaver while traveling in an unfamiliar city – you would be mere taps away from finding all your favorite places, even local events and sightseeing. For every day, I like that I can find the closest In-and-Out Burger, and movie theatre locations and show times. And Starbucks, of course.
